The NHRC Summer Internship Programme offers students a platform to engage with real-world issues related to human rights. Interns will have the opportunity to work closely with experts in the field, conduct research, and contribute to the Commission’s ongoing initiatives.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is a statutory public body responsible for the protection and promotion of human rights in India. It was established under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, and works towards ensuring the dignity and well-being of all individuals.

Eligibility for NHRC Internship

The internship is open to students pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate degrees in law, social sciences, humanities, or related fields. Applicants should have a keen interest in human rights issues and possess strong research and analytical skills.

Role and Responsibilities

Interns will be expected to:

  • Conduct research on human rights issues and related legal frameworks.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports, memos, and other documents.
  • Attend seminars, workshops, and meetings organized by the Commission.
  • Assist in outreach and advocacy efforts aimed at promoting human rights awareness.

The structure of NHRC Internship

The structure of the Summer Internship Programme (SIP) entails a comprehensive approach to sensitizing interns on various human rights issues. With an aim to provide valuable insights and practical experiences, the programme for the year 2023, titled WIP 2023, encompasses the following components:

  • Classroom Sessions: Engaging sessions will be conducted to impart theoretical knowledge and understanding of human rights principles and issues.
  • Interaction with NHRC Officials: Interns will have the opportunity to interact with the Hon’ble Chairperson and Members of NHRC, gaining insights into the workings of the commission.
  • Project Work: Interns will engage in project work focused on addressing specific human rights issues, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios.
  • State Presentation: Interns will prepare presentations on the human rights scenario of the state they belong to, fostering a deeper understanding of regional challenges and concerns.
  • Book Reviews: Interns will undertake book reviews from the NHRC Library, enhancing their understanding of key human rights literature and perspectives.
  • Film Screenings and Discussions: Films on various human rights topics such as child labor, anti-trafficking, health, and education issues will be screened, followed by discussions to deepen understanding and promote critical thinking.
  • Field Visits:
    • Police Stations & Jails: Interns will visit police stations and jails to observe and interact with officers, jail authorities, and inmates, gaining insights into jail and correctional administration.
    • NGO Visits: Interns will visit NGOs working in the field of human rights, allowing them to interact with individuals affected by human rights issues and understand the challenges they face.
    • Visits to National Commissions: Interns will visit National Commissions for Women, Minorities, Scheduled Castes, or Scheduled Tribes to interact with officials and gain insights into the nature of their work.

Perks

  • The following criteria will be considered for granting Certificates of participation : Attendance, punctuality, discipline, and active engagement in sessions, which are mandatory; b. Submission of Group Project Presentations, Project Reports, and Book Reviews within the specified deadlines.
  • Prize money of Rs. 15,000/-, Rs. 10,000/-, and Rs. 5,000/- will be awarded to interns securing the first, second, and third positions, respectively, for the Group Research Project.
  • The top five interns with the highest marks for the Book Review will receive rewards in the form of books priced at a maximum of Rs. 1,000/- each.
  • Similarly, the top three interns from the Declamation contest will be rewarded with books priced at a maximum of Rs. 1,000/- each.
  • An amount of Rs. 12,000/- as stipend.will be paid to all the selected interns.

Mode and Location

The internship will be conducted in a hybrid mode, with both in-person and virtual components. Interns may be required to work remotely or at the NHRC headquarters in New Delhi, depending on the prevailing circumstances.
