About Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education (IDIA)
IDIA (Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education) is a movement aimed at empowering underprivileged and marginalized communities by providing them access to top-tier legal education. Founded by the late Prof. (Dr.) Shamnad Basheer, IDIA seeks to create exceptional lawyers and community leaders from marginalized groups, thereby enriching the legal education landscape in India. By enabling access to premier legal institutions, IDIA is fostering diversity within the legal profession and contributing to a more inclusive society.
In continuation of its mission, the IDIA Bihar Chapter is organizing the 3rd National Public Interest Litigation (PIL) Drafting and Pleading Competition, 2024, in collaboration with Talwar Thakore & Associates (TT&A). This competition offers law students a platform to showcase their legal drafting skills while addressing critical societal issues.
Themes
The organizers invite participants to examine real-life issues through the following themes:
- Environmental Justice
- Access to Justice for Marginalized Communities
- Gender Justice
- Indigenous Rights and Tribal Welfare
- Right to Education
These themes are suggestive.
Participants can choose other contemporary issues
Eligibility
The competition is open to students currently pursuing their Bachelor’s degree in law (3-Year LL.B. course or 5-Year LL.B. course) from any recognized university or college in India. There are no restrictions on the number of entries from any institution. Participants can register individually or as a team of two.
Cross-team participation is allowed.
Submission Guidelines
- Each participating team must submit one PIL draft.
- Participants can include annexures to support their arguments, compiled into a compendium submitted along with the memorial.
- Submissions must be sent to idiabiharevents@gmail.com by September 10, 2024, 11:59 PM, with the subject line “IDIA PIL Draft, Team Code _____.”
- Late submissions, plagiarism, and breaches of anonymity will result in disqualification.
Competition Format
The competition will consist of two main components:
- PIL Drafting: All submissions will be reviewed, and the top 16 teams with the highest scores will proceed to the Oral Rounds.
- Oral Rounds: The Oral Rounds will be conducted online through Google Meet in three stages: the Qualifying Oral Round, the Semi-Final Oral Round, and the Final Oral Round. Each team will have time limits for their submissions, and the rounds will involve questioning by judges.
Prizes
- Winners: Internship opportunity with TT&A.
- Runners-up: Internship opportunity with TT&A.
- Certificates of Excellence and Merit to participants in the Semi-Final and Final Rounds.

Registration Process
Participants must complete the registration form and attach a screenshot of the payment made for the registration fee (Rs. 600/- for single participation and Rs. 900/- for a team of two). Payment details are provided in the official notification.
